Icons subconsciously validate the object for immediate adoption and veneration of our conscious mind [1].

Angels and Icons/Comets and Crosses is local artist Rose Braun’s examination of religious iconography and symbols.  The exhibition embodies the use of various elements of religious imagery, using the exhibition space to integrate the individual images into a whole, in the spirit of installation art.  Braun is interested in the power of traditional symbols, such as numbers and crosses, as well as more cryptic symbols, specifically religious symbols which have the ability to evoke distinct feelings of both solace and unease.  Through her use of religious iconography, Braun is exploring a new direction in her artistic practice.  Her objective is not one of disrespect but rather an eagerness to explore specific ideologies through symbolism.  In her artist statement Braun expands upon her ideas, stating:

Symbols have become, quite necessarily, more than the sum of their parts, which is perhaps why they have come to represent a myriad of emotions rather than a singular ideology or quantifiable notion.

For this exhibition, Braun has not only focused on her painting, but worked with a variety of found materials such as scrap metal, meat hooks and discarded computer motherboards to express her perception of the symbols that she is presenting through sculpture and painting.  Both the process and the materials she uses are profoundly important to her studio practice.  She feels that working with these found materials gives her a greater sense of abandon than with traditional art media.

Rose Braun was born in Saskatchewan and attended university in Regina, Calgary and Vancouver. She has exhibited her work widely throughout Western Canada.    Her work is held in several private and public collections including the Alberta Art Foundation, Yarrow Art Foundation, Montreal and the Selzer Foundation, Germany.
