Helen Pitt Triennial Awards Exhibition 2001 September 14 - October 21 Barbara Choit, Jenny Ham, Polly Hulse, Jace Lasek, Katy Vella Pace, Jesse Birch, Robyn Foster, John Luna, Cindy Mochizuki, Christian Nicolay, Rob Sunderland, Melissa Cowper-Smith, Derek Dunlop, Michael Euyung Oh, Dustin Farrell, Rachel Kiers, Gwenessa Lam, Diana Lepine-Thomas, Mike Simons, Kristy Trinier. The Kelowna Art Gallery has the honour of presenting the Helen Pitt Triennial Awards Exhibition 2001, from September 14 to October 21. This exhibition supports emerging artists who have recently graduated from British Columbia's post secondary art schools, giving them valuable exhibition experience and providing the public with an opportunity to view some of the most engaging art that is being produced in art schools throughout the province. Vernon resident, Helen Pitt, a longtime patron and benefactor of art students, was inspired to establish the fund after attending high school graduation ceremonies at which she found that no awards were being given for excellence in Fine Arts. In 1961, she established a bursary fund of $10,000 with the Vancouver Foundation. The fund grew substantially until her death in 1976, when a bequest from her estate increased the fund to $400,000. This increased capital enabled the program to be expanded and, in 1978, the Graduate Awards and Exhibit was initiated. The work, selected by juries from B.C. art colleges, is now a triennial exhibition, previously held at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (1992), the Surrey Art Gallery (1995), and at the Or Gallery, Vancouver (1999). This is the first time the exhibition has been held outside of the Lower Mainland. The exhibition will include the 1999, 2000 and 2001 award winners from the University of Victoria, the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and Okanagan University College. Art works from 20 emerging artists will be presented. The invitation for the Kelowna Art Gallery to host the 2001 exhibition is appropriate, as 17 Okanagan University College students have been first place winners, runners up or recipients of honourable mention in the past two triennials. The exhibition will provide a context for OUC in a provincial perspective and a follow-up to the OUC fourth year Graduate exhibition which was mounted at the Kelowna Art Gallery in 2000. The artists involved in the exhibition are working in a variety of exciting media and are exploring many themes in their art making practices from photography and painting to video and installation, to name a few. This richly diverse exhbition will engage visitors in the contemporary art that is being produced in our provincial art schools. Carie Helm, Exhibition Coordinator The Kelowna Art Gallery is delighted to acknowledge the support of the Vancouver Foundation, which is sponsoring the Helen Pitt Triennial Awards Exhibition and the accompanying catalogue.
