JIM KALNIN STREAM March 30 - May 27, 2001
The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to present the exhibition, Stream, by artist Jim Kalnin. Stream, is the first KAG solo exhibition of sculpture and mixed media works on paper and canvas, by this long-time resident of the Okanagan Valley and Visual Arts Professor at Okanagan University College. The
exhibition consists of a new series of co-dependent works on paper that are
installed as larger “units.” One
series is called Dog Pond Dancing, after the site from which he drew the
inspiration. In addition, there is
an installation of bound-branch sculptural works that utilizes natural and found
materials, several earlier large-scale works, and an on-site drawing that he
created on the wall of the gallery. Kalnin’s evocative images are environmentally based, but host a playful attitude towards the subject. He explores his subjects through the use of charcoal, paint and other mixed media. His works on paper and canvas are notational – a form of diary activity related to pastime observations. Kalnin’s work deals with images of the natural and near-urban environment, and a reflection of the Okanagan environs. Critical responses to environmental destruction and pollution, and a concern for the health of the planet also find a voice in the work.

places that reveal secrets of nature or remind me of its power, its continual
change and delicate balances are all places that inspire me. It might be an
alpine meadow, a desert, an iceberg, or a swamp, also, archaeological and
historical sites, places of geological significance. Again it is the reminders
of differences, motion, change that I am often drawn to,” reveals Kalnin. Kalnin
studied painting and film animation at the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily
Carr Institute of Art and Design) from 1964 - 1969.
“The noticeable sense of motion in most of my drawing-based art . . .
goes way back to times before I was an animator. I always watched things
in motion and noticed changes in nature, in people,” says Kalnin. Kalnin has taught studio art classes at the gallery, as well as curated past exhibitions. His exhibition history at the gallery started in 1987, and he has had numerous group shows since.
