Recent Acquisitions, Part Two July
30 - September 2, 2001 The Kelowna Art Gallery is
pleased to present its second scheduled Permanent Collection exhibition this
summer in the Reynolds Gallery. The exhibition features newly acquired artwork
by accomplished Canadian artists Germaine Koh, Greg Murdock, Guido Molinari,
Alan Wood and Toni Onley. This exhibition features Self-portrait,
an exciting work in progress by artist and independent curator, Germaine Koh.
Koh’s conceptually-generated work looks at the significance of everyday
actions, familiar objects and common places.
She received a B.A. and B.F.A from the University of Ottawa and an M.F.
A. from Hunter College of City University, New York.
She has exhibited her work widely throughout North America, Europe,
Mexico and Australia since 1990. Jiri, a richly
painted large-scale painting by Vancouver-based artist, Greg Murdock is
displayed in the exhibition. Murdock
studied fine arts at the University of Saskatchewan, the Institute Allende in
Mexico and Emily Carr Insitute of Art and Design.
His work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including
an exhibition at the Kelowna Art Gallery in 1995 titled Greg Murdock:
On Paper. Also featured, three Untitled
prints by one of Canada’s leading modern artists, Guido Molinari.
Molinari has worked consistently
in a non-figurative style for over forty years.
Working as an artist since 1951, he has had countless exhibitions and
received several prestigious awards for his work. Lake
Light #3 and #4 are two of a series of Alan Wood paintings that are
promised gifts to the gallery. They
join a series of prints by Wood already in the collection. Alan Wood is a renowned senior Canadian artist whose work has
been shown extensively throughout Europe, North America and Australia.
The works are part of a series that was produced in response to his
experience living on Okanagan Lake in the late seventies. Following
up on the three Untitled pieces exhibited in Part
One of the Recent Acquisition series, we are showing another piece by Toni
Onley titled Chase, which was completed during the same period.
This technique of torn paper collage began when Onley was studying in
Mexico in the late 1950’s. Onley
has shown extensively throughout Canada and has also been involved in
exhibitions in the United States, France and Mexico.
He currently lives and works in Vancouver. As part of this exhibition, we incorporated a reading area where viewers could peruse catalogues, books and magazines that focused on the featured artists. Installation Images
