Travel
Notes features work by Kelowna-based artist Mary Leskard, created over the
past six years. The colourful,
elaborate collages are impressions of the artist's travels to Malta, China
and the Caribbean. She has
traveled extensively throughout her life and was inspired to respond to
what she remembered of some of the places she has visited through collage.
A large part of her focus has been on her interest in the
architecture she has encountered in her travels, as well as the
inhabitants of the various locales.
Working
mainly from her memories and some reference material, Leskard constructs
intricate collaged works from a wide assortment of materials that she
collects including fragments of photographs, greeting cards, tissue paper,
corrugated cardboard, gift wrap, doilies and metallic papers. Integrating the colours, textures and shapes from her
memories, she creates bustling marketplaces, cultural events and daily
happenings.
Born
in 1925, Mary Leskard has explored her own creativity through painting and
drawing for the past 60 years.
She has also been involved in the performing arts in Kelowna,
creating posters for theatrical performances and designing props.
While she has never studied art formally, she has attended many
artist lectures and taken various arts courses.
She began working in collage six years ago, at age 72.
The Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to present this first public
exhibition of Mary Leskard's work. |
