Recent Acquisitions
From the Collection
December 4, 2004 to February 5, 2005
Two
exhibitions share this space. Work by Montreal-based artist Monika Napier
is located in the center of the gallery and in the Rotary courtyard. More
information about Monika Napier and her work is available on a separate
introductory panel.
The
gallery walls feature a selection of works that have been acquired into
the permanent collection in the past three years. The
Kelowna Art Gallery’s permanent collection
is an important part of the cultural history of Kelowna, the Okanagan,
B.C. and Canada. The Gallery collects and cares for this collection in
trust for the City of Kelowna. Over 460 objects have been acquired into
the permanent collection through donation and purchase and a variety of
media is represented including paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures,
installations and photo-based works.
The collection contains many works that focus on the landscape,
images of the Okanagan and abroad, as well as portraits and abstract
works.
This
exhibition of recent acquisitions includes works by Okanagan-based artists
Anna Coghlin, Briar Craig and Percival Ritchie, Vancouver-based artists
Shannon Oksanen and Scott Livingstone, Winnipeg-based artist Aganetha Dyck,
and Ontario-based artist Gary Spearin. Over the past three years efforts
have been made to acquire works by mid-career and senior Canadian artists
from both inside and outside of the Okanagan Valley. As the city of
Kelowna grows, so does the need for the Gallery’s permanent collection
to grow so that the cultural history of our city, province and country
lives on into the future.
