Artist-in-Residence
John Yeltatzie: Haida Carver
December 13, 2005 to January 28, 2006
In
conjunction with the exhibition Robert
Davidson: The Abstract Edge, the Kelowna Art Gallery is pleased to
present from
December 13, 2005 to January 28, 2006
a eight-week residency featuring Kelowna Haida artist John Yeltatzie, made
possible by generous funding from the RBC Foundation and the Audain
Foundation.
John
Yeltatzie is a wood carver, jeweller, sculptor and house builder.
Traditional Haida mythology, oral tradition and observation of his elders
influence his work. Mr. Yeltatzie has made canoes and masks for
potlatches, steams wood using traditional methods to make boxes, carves
argillite, and creates silver jewellery. He has worked with students on
projects including carving and making drums, and was a carver for the
Haida House in the Grand Hall of the Canadian Museum of Civilization,
Hull, Quebec. Mr. Yeltatzie, with Robert Davidson and Woodrow Morrison,
narrated the film Voices from the
Talking Stick, which shows how art, culture, the environment and
family are part of the Haida identity.
Mr.
Yeltatzie will be in the Scotiabank Studio daily, interacting with
visitors and carving a food bowl and mask out of cedar. Several of Mr.
Yeltatzie’s works, including a five-foot bear pole and several of his
food bowls, will be on display.
